The best way to raise leaders is to provide opportunities for practicing leadership. Sounds simple enough, right? Let me give you an example. I had a 13-year-old student stop by my office for a visit yesterday. During our conversation, she talked about how much she liked physical education class and how she wished they could do P.E. games after school. I took this as an opportunity to help her grow in leadership. I said, “That’s a really cool idea. You should start a club!” She looked puzzled and said, “you mean… I can do something like that? Is that allowed? How do I start?”
What a great lesson that presented itself in such an organic way. When you engage in mindful communication with kids, you hear whispers of opportunity for growth. Start looking; you’ll find these teachable moments.
